Representing Tel Aviv, Representing the West Bank:
A Symposium with Israeli Author Assaf Gavron

The Symposium is comprised of two sessions:
12 PM: Tel Aviv Noir and the Demythologization of Tel Aviv
7 PM: Writing the Occupied Territories: Challenges and Opportunities

Leading Israeli author Assaf Gavron will appear together with UW Madison faculty to explore the challenges facing Israeli writers who are working to break down stereotypical images and provide a more nuanced understanding of Israel and the Middle East.

Assaf Gavron has published five novels, including his most recent The Hilltop, which was named a "Best Book of 2014" by NPR. He is also an accomplished translator, food writer, editor and musician. An Israeli native, Gavron currently teaches literature and creative writing at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

The event is funded by the UW-Madison Jay and Ruth Halls Visiting Scholar Fund, the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies, Hillel Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Middle East Studies Program, , the Center for the Humanities, and the Program in Creative Writing.
