On Sunday, November 17, at 1:00 pm, Beth Israel Center will present an acclaimed documentary film, Bad River.
Told from the perspective of the Bad River Band of Ojibwe in northern Wisconsin, Bad River recounts the tribe’s history, with a special focus on its long battle against Enbridge, a Canadian energy company, and its Line 5 pipeline, built on land stolen from the tribe. In fighting for their home, traditions, and sovereignty, the Band also fights for the health of the Bad River and of Lake Superior, into which it flows. As Eldred Carbine, a Bad River tribal elder, declares: “We gotta protect it…die for it, if we have to.” Along with Edward Norton as a narrator, the film boasts star-studded lists of producers and endorsers.
After the film, we’ll hear from BIC member Zach Masa-Myers about his many summers in Mashkiiziibii (Bad River) and the family stories and history shared with him by his grandmother, a tribal member. And we’ll hear from Anya Janssen, Staff Attorney for Native Nations Partnerships, at Midwest Environmental Advocates, about the legal process to date and going forward.
We invite members of the community to join us at Beth Israel Center, 1406 Mound Street, for this important presentation.
