Kesher Café offers speakers on Israeli topics. BYO lunch is encouraged.

This month will feature a Skype call to the Madison Jewish Community with Anat Hoffman, Israeli activist and Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC). She is the director and founding member of Nashot HaKotel, Women of the Wall. Anat and her group spend much time and energy in legal battles attempting to ensure an egalitarian prayer space for Jews of all denominations and genders.

The topic she will cover is: “What Don’t We Talk About when We Focus on Israel's Security”.
Anat will point out that Focusing on the conflict with Israel's neighbors distracts people from exploring some of the conflicts that rock Israeli society from within. Women's rights, religious pluralism, racism against minorities and struggles for freedom of conscience are some.

When not speaking, Anat and the Women of the Wall, along with IRAC, fight for the Democratic and Jewish State Israel was meant to be. Fighting is done by non-violent demonstrations, and in the courts. Of the many dramatic struggles won, the right of Reform Rabbis to receive governmental pay equal to Orthodox Rabbis is one, and the construction of non-Orthodox synagogues stands out as another.

Anat will talk about many struggles; those won and those pending. She will speak directly for 20 minutes. The remainder of the hour will be devoted to questions and answers.

In order for her to give proper attention to each of the questions, we are asking that people send theirs prior to February 7, to Rachael Sauer, Administrative Assistant for Lifelong Learning at (608) 238-3123 or School@tbemadison.org. These questions will be forwarded to Anat in advance of the Skype session.
