Welcome the Stranger: One Person’s Journey to America
Join Jewish congregations across the country in recognizing National Refugee Shabbat, which honors people forced to leave their homelands by danger and oppression. At Temple Beth El, one recent refugee will tell the story about how and why they came here and the challenges and joys they have faced since arrival. This will be followed by a brief update from Jewish Social Services on the current state of affairs for refugees nationally and locally, and what we can do to help.

In Madison, Jewish Social Services and Open Doors for Refugees coordinate a community-wide effort to welcome our new neighbors. Temple Beth El volunteers have played a major role, by cleaning apartments, moving furniture, buying household goods, tutoring children, offering rides, and making countless generous donations. We will honor our volunteers at this service.

Dinner and schmooze to precede the service. Please join us for any or all of the evening:
6:00 pm Dinner from Banzo (registration required)
6:45 pm Shabbat Schmooze—a casual wine and cheese reception before our Shabbat service (open to all)
7:30 pm National Refugee Shabbat Service with oneg Shabbat to follow (open to all)

Register for dinner by March 18 ($18/adult and $11/youth).

Menu includes falafel, pita bread, hummus, marinated chicken, chopped salad, majadra rice, and more.
