The Social Action Committee invites you to welcome Shabbat together at dinner and a service focused on the struggle for racial justice and what we can do to support real progress. We will reaffirm why racial justice is important to us as Jews and learn about meaningful actions we can take in our own community. Enjoy Shabbat dinner catered by Banzo and information about all our social justice activities and volunteer opportunities throughout the evening.

Our speaker during the service will be Rev. Marcus Allen, pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the newly elected President of the African-American Council of Churches in Dane County. After being ordained in July 2005, Pastor Allen served in the U.S. Army for over 10 years, including three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received several medals and awards. He preached while abroad, assisting soldiers with motivation and spiritual guidance to help endure the hardships of being in a war zone. He then completed studies for his master and doctor of divinity degrees and served as a pastor for four years in Virginia. He has served at Mount Zion in Madison since 2017.

This Shabbat service will build on Rabbi Biatch’s Rosh Hashanah sermon on racial justice (https://www.tbemadison.org/blog?post_id=931713). Pastor Allen will talk about the power of a team in achieving racial justice and how the black and Jewish communities can work together more effectively. We will reaffirm why racial justice is important to us as Jews and learn about meaningful actions we can take. The evening will help us build more effective and consistent teams in our racial justice efforts and elsewhere.
