We will gather in a member's home at 6:00 p.m. for a Shabbat service. This will be followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner at 6:45 p.m., and a discussion by Diane Brakarsh from One Billion Rising at 7:30 p.m.
One Billion Rising, a global campaign to end violence against women and girls, was initiated in 2013 by Eve Ensler. It is a series of coordinated grassroots movements to end violence, oppression and abuse in all its many forms.
Particular "risings" in each locale reflect issues specific to that region, from denial of education of girls, female genital mutilation, cultural tolerance of rape and wide-spread human trafficking (which, incidentally, is happening right here in Madison).
Central to the campaign is the use of dance as political protest in the form of flash mobs, a tactic that makes a very bold statement and is empowering and healing for the participants. Come and learn about this unique campaign and some of the issues, around the block, around the country and around the planet, that it addresses.
